As we shift into Fall, it’s clear that we are now living through a time that is so incredibly busy, stressful, and overwhelming. Hoping that it will slow down, and that we’ll all go back to our old ‘normal’ is wishful thinking. Many people feel like this is the busiest they’ve ever been, and that it is getting progressively worse. I notice that some people are handling all of this a little bit better than others, and their resilience is playing a big role. The good news is that we can all strengthen our resilience muscles so read on for some tips!

Stress, overwhelm, and burnout are interconnected phenomena that can have a profound impact on our well-being. Chronic stress can lead to feelings of overwhelm, which, if left unaddressed, can eventually result in burnout. Recognizing the signs and taking proactive steps to manage stress is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life alignment (notice that I didn’t say work/life balance, since I don’t believe that there is ever true balance – and that’s a topic for another time).

Stress is the tension one feels in dealing with the pressures and demands of life. It is usually described as mental or emotional strain. There are three main types of stress:

  1. Survival stress is when you have a fight or flight attitude and feel in danger.
  2. Internal stress is caused by having worries and emotional stressors.
  3. Environmental stress is felt if you have problems with excessive noise or crowds.
