Observed on the first Monday in September, the original intent of Labor Day was to provide a holiday that would honor the social and economic achievements of American workers. Essentially, it was intended to be an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country.
With Labor Day celebrations being wide and varied – picnics, outdoor activities, shopping, fireworks, parades, and even concerts – there is no prescribed way to celebrate this holiday. This is perhaps the original purpose, a day to give people who work hard throughout the year the free time to do anything they may like.
