Many people spend a great deal of time trying to control things that were never fully theirs to control.
Outcomes.
Other people’s decisions.
Future events.
How things will unfold.
This is understandable.
Control can feel comforting.
It creates the illusion of certainty in situations that feel uncertain.
But there is a difference between control and influence.
Control assumes responsibility for the outcome.
Influence focuses on what we can meaningfully contribute.
Our effort.
Our preparation.
Our communication.
Our choices.
The challenge is that many people unknowingly carry responsibility for both.
And that creates exhaustion.
One of the most freeing realizations is recognizing that we can care deeply about something without controlling it.
We can do our best.
We can show up fully.
We can act with intention.
And still allow space for uncertainty.
This doesn’t mean becoming passive.
It means directing energy toward what is actually within our reach.
When we make that shift, something often changes.
The pressure softens.
Our thinking becomes clearer.
And we find ourselves with more energy for the things that truly matter.
If there is something weighing heavily on you right now, consider asking:
What part of this is mine to influence?
And what part am I trying to control?
The answer may offer more relief than you expect.
