As the seasons change, I always feel this pull to start fresh. Fall especially brings that sense of possibility. While a lot of people wait for January to set resolutions, I’ve noticed I’m most inspired to create new routines when the air cools and the days shift. Something about it feels like an open door.
I don’t think change has to be about big, dramatic goals. More often it’s the little choices we repeat every day that end up shaping us. Our routines either help us grow, or they quietly keep us stuck. I love the way F.M. Alexander put it: “People do not decide their future. They decide their habits, and their habits decide their future.”
The problem is, we often aim too high. We promise ourselves we’ll be healthier, more patient, more mindful. Those ideas sound great but they’re usually too vague to stick with. That’s where micro habits come in.
A micro habit is something small and doable. Drinking water before your morning coffee. Taking one slow breath before you answer an email. Reading just a paragraph from the book that’s been sitting on your nightstand. Tiny steps that don’t take much time, but over weeks and months, make a real difference.
They may not seem like much in the moment, but each one is a small promise kept to yourself. And when you keep those promises, you build confidence and momentum. Over time those little wins snowball into bigger change.
Transformation isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment. It’s about making the next right choice, right where you are. One small habit. One small step. That’s how we move closer to the lives we want.
